RAM Tubulars Turns 30!

We have marked three decades in business with a relocation to one of the most prestigious streets in Aberdeen – Queen’s Road. The move brings with it a boost to operational efficiency and places us in the heart of the city’s oil and gas industry district.

We’ve come a long way since we began as Reusables and Metals based at the Fordoun Airfield in Kincardineshire in 1993, when we made our name purchasing surplus and used tubulars from the oil and gas industry and finding new uses for them in the construction, water well and utility drilling markets. It is this resourcefulness that has defined our journey to where we are today, as our Managing Director, Jim Stewart explains.

“Identifying new ways for businesses to make the most of their metal waste has been a hallmark of RAM Tubulars since its inception, and is more relevant than ever in today’s marketplace, where sustainability and a move towards a circular economy are essential ingredients for any responsible and progressive business. Looking back over the last 30 years, I’m proud of the part we’ve played in promoting such things and excited about what the future holds for RAM Tubulars.”

Burgeoning demand led to expansion, investment in new technologies and a move to Dyce, offering better logistical links with Aberdeen. A distribution facility was established at Rotherham to fulfil orders to a growing market in northern England and the Midlands.

Work from some of the world’s biggest oil and gas companies followed as our profile grew beyond the UK, with sales taking off in Europe. This soon became part of a wider international import and export network during the early 2000’s as the business began to diversify into certified tubulars, premium grade drill pipes, and equipment.

By 2008 a purpose-built site at Kinellar was purchased and subsequently expanded to over ten acres. With further investment and demand driving the business forward, a pipe cleaning and inspection service was also developed to provide customers with a comprehensive in-house service.

The next decade brought further milestones that included expansion in the USA, establishing - RAM Tubulars Inc. - in Houston, Texas to serve the North American market. And two head office moves, first to Discovery Drive, Westhill and most recently Queen's Road, Aberdeen. We continue to bolster our enviable reputation worldwide offering a complete lifecycle solution; from supply as new to responsible disposal and recycling, backed up with industry-leading environmental credentials.

We have also consolidated our position over the years as the go-to supplier for piling pipe for use as foundations in construction projects big and small, as well as establishing two separate divisions of our parent company – RAM Recycling and RAM Premium.

The future looks bright for RAM Tubulars, with a new riverside storage and distribution depot opened at the start of 2023 in Goole, Yorkshire, and we have further plans afoot to turn our Birchwood site into a fully fledged decommissioning facility, as we continue to spot new opportunities in the marketplace to reuse, repurpose and recycle.

“Celebrating a milestone such as this really brings into sharp focus what we’ve achieved since 1993, when we started out with only three employees. That team has now grown to 25. The one thing that has remained the same throughout RAM Tubulars’ life is our commitment to building long-lasting relationships with our customers across the world. It has been a privilege to have a front row seat watching the business go from strength to strength through our growing network of customer connections. Stepping into our new premises on Queen’s Road was an exciting moment, and the beginning of another era for us as our presence around the world reaches new heights.” - Fiona Stewart, Commercial Director.
